
Making Bathroom Heaters That Won’t Blind You
When we design infrared lamps for bathrooms, we’re basically playing a balancing act. You want the room to feel warm the second you step out of the shower, but you don’t want to feel like you’re staring into the sun. The real headache is the visible light. Standard short-wave lamps have this harsh, blinding glare. It’s annoying for adults, but it’s actually a problem for babies whose eyes aren’t fully developed yet. Nobody wants a heating lamp that feels like an interrogation light. Taming the glare To fix this, we don’t just use a raw halogen bulb. We use specific quartz coatings or filtered filaments to shift the energy. Basically, we kill off those piercing blue and white frequencies but keep all the cozy infrared heat. You end up with a soft, warm glow. It gives you all the heat you need to stop shivering, without attacking your retinas. The build matters too The bulb is only half the story. The housing has to do its job, too. We use deep-set reflectors to push the heat straight down. It also hides the filament from your direct line of sight, so you aren’t accidentally staring right into the heat source. For the glass, we stick with quartz. It’s tough. It can handle being flicked on and off a dozen times a day without cracking from the sudden temperature jump. One quick tip: watch your ceiling height. If you mount these too low, it doesn’t matter how “soft” the light is—you’re just going to get too hot. The trade-off Here’s the catch. Filtering out that blinding light costs a bit of energy. Some of that power gets absorbed or bounced back. Because of that, you might need a slightly higher wattage to get that same “toasty” feeling you’d get from an unfiltered lamp. Just make sure your power supply can handle the extra load. If it can’t, you’ll deal with flickering or weird cold spots, and that’s the last thing you want when you’re stepping out of a hot bath.
