
Why Your Patio Heater Actually Needs an IP55 Rating
Let’s be honest: the outdoors are brutal on electronics. Between the humidity, the random rain showers, and that creeping condensation, most outdoor heaters are basically fighting a losing battle from day one. We built our IP55-rated units to stop that fight. We wanted something that actually keeps the guts of the machine—the wiring and the heating element—dry and safe, no matter what the weather is doing.
What does “IP55” actually mean for you?
You’ll see those numbers on the box, but here is what they mean in the real world. The first “5” means dust can’t get inside and mess with the electronics. The second “5” is the important one: it means the unit can handle water jets hitting it from any angle. We don’t just slap a sticker on it. We use tight gaskets and smart drainage ports so water doesn’t pool inside the housing. That pooling is exactly why those cheap, generic heaters usually die after a few months.
The hidden killer: Condensation
Here is something most people don’t think about: fog. When a scorching hot infrared lamp cools down in the damp night air, moisture clings to the glass tube. If that water just sits there, it creates “hot spots.” Then, the next time you turn it on, the thermal stress hits those spots and—pop—the tube cracks. To fix this, we designed the housing to breathe. It lets air flow through, which clears the fog quickly and keeps the lamp dry.
The honest trade-off
I’ll be straight with you: making a heater this sealed makes it a bit heavier. You’ll notice the weight when you’re installing it, and it doesn’t let air move as freely as a cheap, open-frame heater would. But honestly? I’d rather carry a heavier unit for five minutes during setup than deal with a short circuit or a burnt-out element in the middle of January.

The real win here is the longevity. Because the wiring and the lamp are shielded from mist and splashes, the contact points don’t corrode. You know that crusty green oxidation you see on the terminals of old heaters? We’ve basically engineered that out.
