
Stop Guessing Your Bathroom Heater Wattage
When you’re picking out infrared lamps for the ceiling, it’s tempting to just go for the biggest number on the box. But here’s the thing: more power doesn’t always mean more comfort. It usually just means a higher electric bill and a fixture that’s running way too hot. The goal is to find that sweet spot where the heat actually reaches you without wasting energy.
Getting the size right
Bathrooms are tricky. Between the cold tiles and the exhaust fans, heat disappears fast. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—something under 4m²—you don’t need a powerhouse. A modest 250W to 400W lamp does the trick. In a space that small, the heat hits you almost instantly before it has a chance to soak into the walls. It’s cozy, simple, and efficient. But big master baths? That’s a different story. If you put one massive lamp in a large room, you end up with a “hot spot.” You’ll be roasting if you stand directly under it, but you’ll still be shivering the second you step two feet to the left. Instead, try spreading the load. A couple of 400W or 600W units spaced out work much better. It keeps the warmth even and stops your lamps from burning out because they aren’t struggling at 100% capacity just to keep up.
A few things to watch out for
Before you start buying, take a look at your wiring. Higher wattage means more current, and you don’t want to trip your breaker every time you take a shower. You also have a choice between “shortwave” and “longwave” heat. Shortwave hits you instantly—it’s a bit more aggressive. Longwave is gentler, though it takes a moment longer to feel it. And please, give your fixtures some breathing room. A 600W lamp gets seriously hot. If you cram it into a tight ceiling cavity without any airflow, you’re basically baking your insulation. Leave at least a 10cm gap around the fixture so it can breathe.
Making it smarter
Since infrared heat warms you and not the air, there’s no point in leaving the lights on when the room is empty. You’re just heating the floor tiles for no reason. Hook them up to a timer or a motion sensor. That way, the warmth is there the moment you walk in, and it disappears the moment you leave. Match the wattage to your square footage, spread the lamps out, and you’ll stop paying for heat that just vanishes into the ceiling.
