Most of us look at those ceiling heat lamps and just think, “Nice, I won’t freeze when I step out of the shower.” But there’s actually some pretty cool science happening up there. It’s not just about warming up the air. These lamps use something called shortwave infrared (SWIR). Instead of just making the room feel cozy, they actually go after the moisture hiding in your walls.
How it actually works
Here’s the thing: normal heat just floats around. But shortwave radiation? It digs deeper. It pushes moisture out of the porous stuff—your grout, your sealants, the nooks and crannies where mold loves to hide. By cranking up the surface temperature of your walls and ceiling quickly, the water evaporates way faster. Basically, you’re drying out the room from the inside out. It keeps those damp corners from becoming a breeding ground for fungus.
A few things to watch out for
Now, these aren’t your average lightbulbs. They pack a punch. Because the heat is so intense, you can’t just slap them anywhere. If they’re installed too low, you’re going to feel like you’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet—and you might even melt some of your plastic fixtures. Stick to the installation guide. It’s there to make sure the heat spreads evenly across the floor without creating weird “hot spots” on your ceiling.
Keeping things running
Bathrooms are tough on gear. Between the steam and all those cleaning chemicals, things can get corrosive. We use quartz glass to handle the abuse, but the seals have to stay tight.
