Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom is basically like inviting a fight with steam and moisture. Water and electricity aren’t friends. If your housing isn’t sealed tight, you’re looking at short circuits or ground faults—which is the last thing you want when you’re stepping out of the shower. To handle this, we stick to the IP66 standard.
The Secret to a Tight Seal
An IP66 rating means the unit can handle dust and powerful sprays of water without breaking a sweat. But here’s the thing: a plastic shell isn’t enough. The real danger zone is where the wiring actually enters the heater. That’s why we use compression glands and silicone gaskets. It keeps the moisture out of the terminals so you don’t have to worry about a leak turning into a disaster. We also use ceramic or reinforced polymers for the lamp holders. These materials are great at blocking current from leaking into the chassis. If you’re checking the safety codes for wet zones, you’ll want to make sure that leakage current stays under 0.75mA.
Safety Nets and Grounding
Even with a waterproof shell, you need a backup plan. You’ve got to wire these units into a dedicated GFCI or RCD circuit. Think of it as a safety switch. If a seal ever fails and water hits the filament, the RCD trips in a fraction of a second and cuts the power. Plus, we build a heavy-duty grounding lug right into the aluminum housing. This gives any stray current a quick path to the ground, so the outer casing doesn’t accidentally become “live” and give you a shock.
The Trade-off You Should Know About
There’s a catch with IP66 sealing. Because the system is closed tight to keep water out, it also traps heat inside. While you’re feeling nice and warm, the internal electronics and wires are baking. If you use standard PVC wiring, the insulation will get brittle and crack within a year. It’s just not built for that kind of heat cycle. To fix that, we use high-temperature silicone-insulated cabling. It handles the heat without burning out, meaning your heater actually lasts.
